Duke Ellington Mural Rededication Program
July 22 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
The Duke Ellington Mural on the True Reformer building has become an iconic feature of the U Street cityscape. Originally created in 1997, the mural adorned the west-facing side of the True Reformer building for 8 years from 2004 until 2012 when it was removed due to structural issues. It was restored to its full glory on May 3rd of this year. On July 22nd from 6:30-8:30pm, we’ll partner with DC Murals, Spectacle and Story to host an official rededication in the True Reformer auditorium (1200 U Street, NW, 1st Floor).
The program will include a panel discussion featuring: Jazz Historian Sandra Butler-Truesdale, DC Historian Blair Ruble, and the creator of the Ellington Mural, G. Byron Peck. The panel will be moderated by Shellee Haynesworth, creator of the Black Broadway on U project.
The panel will be followed by a live jazz performance. Light refreshments will be served.
This program is FREE and open to the public. Visit https://ellingtonmural.eventbrite.com to register.
