A Statement from our Executive Director

As you may have heard, President Trump’s proposed budget for FY18 eliminates funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Institute for Museum and Library Studies.

As the NEH’s designated state council for the District of Columbia, the Humanities Council of Washington, DC (HumanitiesDC) has relied on funding from the NEH for 37 years. Closure of the NEH would be detrimental to HumanitiesDC. Our programs would be cut severely. They would rely on the great local agencies with whom we have established partnerships and the generosity of donors

Since 1980, HumanitiesDC has supported thousands of projects throughout our great city – across all Wards. The humanities nurture civic involvement and civil conversation, inspire scholarship and leadership, build bridges across our diverse communities, and encourage us to celebrate our shared heritage while building shared hopes for our future.

You, the community, have been the beneficiary, and we need your help.

On March 22, 2017, we will join our cultural partners for ArtsAdvocacy Day at the John A. Wilson Building. Join us and show your support for local organizations, artists, and scholars. They enrich the vibrant cultural fabric of our city.

Share stories of how the arts, humanities, heritage programs, and preservation of our city’s memories have enhanced your life as a Washingtonian with local leaders – encouraging them to support these important activities.

Together, we can take action to ensure that members of Congress do not pass the proposed budget. As members of the Federation of State Humanities Councils, we are collaborating with other councils to conduct outreach to members of Congress to support continued funding for the NEH. Ask your friends, families, and colleagues to urge their members of Congress to support funding for the NEH.

The NEH is critical to our country, and our community. We thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Joy Ford Austin
Executive Director, HumanitiesDC
