Soul of the City
Soul of the City is a leadership program designed to develop DC youth into tomorrow’s community leaders. Participants learn to take pride in their neighborhoods, and to stay informed, confident, and able to speak out as
community leaders. The program solicits applications from youth aged 14-18, with diverse backgrounds, but many are from low-income areas of Washington, D.C.
The program encourages high-school students to identify key political, social, and community issues within their communities, and to devise original methods of resolution and progressive change. Students learn a brief, but thorough, history of D.C., experience the city through cultural expression, field trips, and guest speakers, and are encouraged to continue to contribute positively to the city’s future. Soul of the City reflects the Humanities Council’s core values and mission of promoting life-long learning, civic engagement and cultural enrichment.

- Youth issues
- Civic participation and citizenship
- Building community
- Affordable Housing
- Crime prevention
- Health care
