Randall School, First and Half Streets SW

The earliest section of this school building was built in 1907 as Cardozo Elementary School. In 1911, it was converted to Cardozo Manual Training School, with an adjacent building added to the west to house a cooking room, sewing room, print shop, laundry, and carpentry shop. In 1925, the school was converted yet again, with additions made, and renamed Randall Junior High School. A final major addition was added in 1949 to the east. The original school building still stands in the middle of the complex. Later uses included a homeless shelter (closed in 2004), and the Millenium Arts Center, a gallery with studios for visual artists. In 2006, the building was purchased by the Corcoran School of Art; they sold it in 2010 to the Rubells, art collectors who plan to open a museum of contemporary art on the site.
